TSC boss jumping the gun
LATELY, there are many reports in the papers about improving teachers’ package by the new TSC chairman. But he overlooked the immediate problem of teachers regarding outstanding leave fares. He has “wounded” these teachers and yet despite that, teachers are forced to turn up for work or else they will be automatically suspended from the payroll. Is this the chairman’s so-called “quick fix” solution? What department did the chairman worked before becoming TSC boss? I urged the chairman not to go to the media and give false hopes to the teachers. If you’re serious in changing teachers’ package, then put into action what you preach, starting with the issue of teachers’ outstanding leave fares. – Damien Robinson Hophand, via email

Increase VAT collection

I SUPPORT the MP for Kundiawa-Gembogl Joe Mek Teine’s call to raise VAT collection in the province (Jan 18). Its annual collection is around K80,000 for the past five to seven years and that is not sufficient to do anything apart from paying the public servants. I agree that something must be done to increase the current collection. However, the most common problem with business houses in the province is that they are not faithful in paying the monthly GST. I would like to ask the member, who is a businessman himself, how faithful was he in paying his GST in the last five years. I am delighted now that he knows what he is talking about to raise the internal revenue of the province for the coming years. – Observer, Port Moresby

More condoms, more woes

IT is all well and good for AusAID and the National AIDS Council Secretariat to distribute free condoms (Jan 23) throughout the country. This will address the issue of preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS. The other issue not being addressed is the loss of income from the male bread winners in families to the sex trade which will no doubt increase as a result of access to free condoms. Is this another typical case of take the money and run (for distributing condoms) by an Australian contractor without regard to the results on the ground? – Jack Spasm, via email

Lagea’s efforts applauded

I WOULD like to commend the Kagua-Erave MP James Lagea for introducing the HIV/AIDS test kit in the electorate. As Lagea said, the health services in the area had deteriorated and it would be good to educate our people on the negative effects of HIV/AIDS before any development projects were to be implemented. I am confident the people of Kagua-Erave will see some real tangible developments. – Para Rekalo, Kagua, SHP

Give us our money

I CALL on the National Statistic Office management to explain why participants of the demography health survey project have not been paid their outstanding allowances. We have not been paid our allowance since 2006 and are wondering where the money that was recently released by Department of Finance and Treasury went to. Give us our money for our work. – Frustrated 2006 DHS surveyor, via email
