Concern over three probes on porn

By ELIZABETH VUVU
EAST New Britain police commander Insp Samuel Niba is concerned that various authorities are conducting separate investigations into the production of pornography in the province.

He said there appeared to be at least three separate investigations.
One is led by the provincial administration and another by a Rabaul team as directed by Rabaul MP Dr Allan Marat who is also the Attorney-General and Justice Minister.
Police are also conducting their own investigations in Kokopo, Kerevat and Rabaul.
Insp Niba said it was a good initiative on everybody’s part but could result in legal implications and added no one, other than the police, could confiscate materials as evidence.
He advised anyone who had done so to surrender them to the police “so that we can prosecute the culprits at once”.
He said that if necessary, foreigners could be extradited to PNG to face charges.
Investigations thus far showed that an Australian, who came to PNG to do volunteer work in education in 2001, was involved.
He fled the country in 2004 just before police were about to question him, several pornographic materials were found at his house in Kokopo.
Insp Niba urged anyone with information to contact the police.
