Public servants face charges

TWO district managers in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands are facing serious charges for allegedly defying instructions and misusing government vehicles during the festive season.
One of them allegedly used a vehicle to transport relatives and wantoks in the rural areas while another vehicle had its windscreen smashed by youths.
Eastern Highlands Administrator Munare Uyassi told The National that the two men were among 28 public servants facing disciplinary charges.
He said the 26 others faced a variety of charges, including absenteeism, disobeying instructions and misusing vehicles.
Another senior officer, Kainantu district administer Ben Beyau had been charged with driving a health services vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and allegedly crashed a day-old vehicle near Yonki.
Mr Uyassi said public servants must handle State vehicles with care as they were bought with public money.
He said all public servants were advised to return Government vehicles after carrying out their duties during the festive season.
Only ambulances and hospital vehicles were exempted from the ruling, he said.
