Green light given to subsidise school fees

MPS wishing to subsidise school fees can do so using their district support grants, Vice-Minister for National Planning and District Development Phillip Kikala said yesterday.
This was allowed as the Basic Services Improvement Programme (BSIP) guidelines did not include school fees, he said in response to comments by shadow minister Pairu Aihi.
He said the Government had also allocated K10 million to initiate meaningful and impact-oriented projects
“Mr Aihi should assess what he and his Kairiku-Hiri Joint District Planning and Budget Priorities Committee has on their agenda first before joining thousands of parents across the country in the decade of school fee payments,” he said.
Mr Kikala advised all MPs and their respective committees to first identify impact-oriented infrastructure projects in the sectors of education, health, law and order, water supply, agriculture, transport infrastructure and rural communication before submitting their budget and documentation of the K10 million to the district development office for screening.
