Wabag faces classroom woes

By PETER PIA
STUDENTS attending lower grades at the Wabag Primary School are faced with shortage of classrooms.
Two classrooms were pulled down during the holidays and another four are set to follow to make way for the upgrading of the Highlands Highway.
Many students were shocked that two classrooms for Grade 3 were removed to cater for the K11 million Wabag town-Warumanda section of the Highlands Highway upgrading and sealing.
According to the plan for the road works sighted by The National, a total of six classrooms would be removed .
The school’s board chairman John Kopi expressed concern that the students were already affected and this would create more problems.
Mr Kopi said if four more classrooms were removed, students would be forced to have their classes out in the open.
Community leader Keps Pakau called on the provincial government to immediately address the problem.
Mr Pakau said the school academic year had resumed and children needed the classrooms for their classes.
Mr Pakau said the school was built in the 1950s and many of the buildings needed renovation and maintenance or removal.
He claimed the provincial government had never assisted the school though senior public servants working with provincial government send their children to this school.
Provincial education adviser Robert Ganim said they had already arranged for an old education resource centre to cater for the two classes.
