10 Asians arrested for being in PNG illegally

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
POLICE in Enga have arrested and charged 10 Asians with entering the country illegally and engaging in business without proper permit.
This has prompted a call on the Government to enforce strict controls on people entering the country as tourists, especially Asians.
A senior police officer made this call in Porgera after discovering a number of Asians operating and working as shop assistants in retail shops in the valley without proper work permits.
Insp Albert Beli, police station commander for Porgera and field commander of a special police operation code-named Klinim Porgera Town, said some of these foreigners had entered the country illegally while others had entered using tourist visas but had overstayed to do business.
Insp Beli said police had found that six Chinese and four Malaysians were conducting business in Porgera without proper visas.
He said two of them had proper passports and had entered the country as tourists while the rest had no passports.
He said all 10 people, including a female, had been arrested and charged with entering the country illegally and working and doing business without proper visa documents.
Insp Beli said three of the Malaysians had also been charged with having pornographic CDs in their possession and duplicating and selling them to locals.
He said police had confiscated six pornographic CDs from them.
The Asians have all been released on police bail of between K1,000 and K2,000 and will appear in the Wabag District Court at a date to be set this week.
