District origins are Mioks trials

By PETER PIA
THE Toyota Enga Mioks management are selecting a new 25-man train-on squad for the coming SP Cup competition.
The players will be selected from the “district of origin” rugby league matches, which will start on Saturday.
Mioks’ executive officer Eddie Muller said yesterday the district of origin games would help the selectors to pick the best players for the Mioks team.
Muller said eight teams confirmed to play were Kompiam/Ambum, Laiagam, Wapenamanda, Porgera, Maip/Mulitaka, Hagen Blocks, Wabag East and Wabag West.
He said matches would be played at Johnson Siki oval in Wabag.
“We want all Enga-based players to play in their own district team so that we will select them in the train-on squad if they perform well,” he said.
Muller said that Wabag district alone would come up with two teams, Wabag East and Wabag West.
He warned that players found to be playing in different teams would not be considered for selection.
“We will also consider other Enga-born players playing in other SP Cup teams like Eki Ene (Lae Bombers), Roy Tela (Wari Vele Raiders), Mack Siwi (Coca-Cola Lahanis) and others,” Muller said.
He added first priority would be given to local players in Enga.
Mioks’ board chairman Robert Ganim expects the competition to be tough and competitive.
Ganim said the selection would be done based on players’ performances.
He said the selectors and sponsor, Ela Motors, would be on the ground to identify potential and skilled players.
On Saturday, Kompiam/Ambum will play Wabag West, Laiagam take on Wapenamanda, Wabag East meet Maip/Muitaka and Porgera face Hagen Blocks.
On Sunday, Wabag East meet Hagen Blocks, Porgera play Kompiam/Ambum, Laiagam face Wabag West and Maip/Mulitaka meet Wapenamanda.
The games start at 10am.
