Gazelle and Wantoks record victories POM in softball

By WENDY KATUSELE
TOP teams Gazelle and Budget Real Estate Wantoks returned to the winners’ circle at the weekend in Port Moresby women’s softball.
Gazelle proved their 5-0 beating by Stingerz was fluke with a better 8-2 win against Admiralty, who had been consistent lately.
Wantoks, who lost to the Manuasians, bounced back to beat Dolphins 8-6 in a close encounter.
In the other matches, premiers Airways Bears thrashed Malangan 18-1 and Stingerz forfeited Manolos.
Gazelle were first to bat but strong fielding by Admiralty kept them from getting home.
The Manusians also found the going tough against Gazelle’s new pitcher Margaret Bundu and catcher Shirley Kalimet.
Gazelle’s young Natasha Pilak scrambled home in the second inning to open up their scorebook but Admiralty replied with two runs from Erica Bob and Gloria Unavi to take the lead.
Fielding errors began to creep into the Manusians’ defence as Gazelle went on a rampage to pile on four runs through Tessie Komek, Mathilda Pondriket, Grace Wanma and Navasha Pilak to take over the lead 5-2.
Admiralty’s only other run was scored in at the bottom of the third inning through Paula John while Gazelle’s top fielding the next two innings was further complemented by good batting with replacement Chinta Wanma, Natasha Pilak, Jenny Pilak and Pala Manet sailing home to consolidate their win.
Again fielding errors became evident with the help of Mother Nature as downpour of rain contributed to easy fly balls failing to land in the fielders gloves as the Antelopes brushed aside bitter memories of the previous weekend.
Admiralty had their chance to turn the tide at their last turn at bat with none down and a loaded base but again Bundu was well directed by catcher Kalimet to mar their chances.
