CAN you believe that we are about to stamp “paid” across the words
January 2007? Tomorrow, jolly old Thursday, will be the first day of
February. There’s something a bit haphazard about February; all the other
months are a neat and tidy 30 or 31 days, but February flitters around
trying to remember whether she has 28 days this year, or 29 ...

AND then there’s all that tiresome business about Leap Year every fourth
year, and people who revel in being just 10 years old when they’re really
40, and look every inch of it to boot.

THANK goodness for our Chinese friends who are about to enjoy their New
Year. We discovered that one of our daughters was born in the Year of the
Pig, which is celebrated this year; we have a grand-daughter who is
appropriately enough a Rooster. One of our sons is an Ox, while nobody
will be surprised to learn that we are – Snakes.

ISN’T it just a little disingenuous of Air Niugini to claim that their
recent fare reductions are a result of an
upswing in passenger numbers?
***
We think the main factor in Air Niugini’s reduced fares – and by the way,
they don’t come into effect until tomorrow – lies with Airlines of PNG’s
willingness to provide some realistic competition and give passengers
huge benefits in the process.
***
AS for any positive PR, our oldest airline might have reaped from the
price cuts, their timing when utter chaos rules at all major terminals
obscures the benefits.
***
IN the next week or so, we’ll pen a few lines about an Air Niugini
domestic flight we were forced to take yesterday. Suffice it to say that
Jackson’s domestic terminal at 3.35 in the morning is a pretty good
imitation of Dante’s Inferno.

WHISPER: The excellent Indian chef who was until recently resting in the
shade has now re-appeared at Lamana’s elegant Palazzo. If you haven’t
tried this cool and spacious classic restaurant, with a menu set to
tantalise even the more obscure Epicurean tastes, may we encourage you to
do so? Reservations are a good idea – ring 323 2333 and ask for the
Palazzo.
