Mendi needs a specialist doc

By JEFFREY ELAPA
THE Mendi General Hospital in the Southern Highlands province needs a specialist doctor, and the provincial administration needs to provide the necessary incentive for such a specialist to go and live and work in the province.
The hospital’s chief executive officer Joe Turian said the hospital needed a paediatrician and an obstetrician.
He said over the past years the Department of Health had made funds available to have visiting specialist doctors from Port Moresby, Goroka and Mt Hagen visit the province monthly, but this was an expensive exercise and not helpful.
Mr Turian said the hospital had 10 doctors but desperately needed two specialist doctors to fill the gap at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Ialibu and Tari district hospitals are in need of doctors.
The Tari hospital has been without a trained medical doctor for the past 10 years.
The hospital has been run by nursing and health extension officers.
