Expat’s presence worries villagers

By JAMES KILA
COMMUNITY leaders in the remote Karimui-Salt Nomane district of Simbu province have raised concerns over the presence of an Asian individual operating in their area.
The leaders told The National in Goroka that a foreigner, believed to be a Filipino, was organising villagers to chop down trees to build a road that would link the remote district to the provincial capital, Kundiawa.
The villagers are working for free and were promised that payment for their labour would be made later.
Leaders Galiabe Kiru, Wila Olape, Inuabe Egaiyano and Bob Niglai said the person had told them that he was a volunteer engaged by aMember of Parliament from the province.
With the national eclection just around the corner, the leaders were curious about his presence and the project.
The leaders said they had contacted the Works Department about the expatriate and the project, but the department was not aware of the issue.
