Parents urged to send kids to school

By ANDREW ALPHONSE
PARENTS in the Hela region of the Southern Highlands province have been urged to send all their school-age children to school this year.
Former governor Anderson Agiru made this remark in his keynote address at Pureni Primary School in Koroba recenly.
Mr Agiru was invited to the school to open a new double classroom built for K20,000 when he was the governor in 1999.
Mr Agiru told 3,000-odd people that had gathered for the occasion that Hela must invest heavily in human resources development.
He said when the rich natural resources in the region were depleted, Hela would depend on human resources to build the region.
He challenged parents to sell the best pigs to earn money for their children’s education.
Catholic priest Fr Mathias Olape, who is also from the area, told parents that they must pay fees as the free education policy had failed students in the province.
Kevin Solomon, senior community relations officer for Porgera Joint Venture in Tari also announced that PJV would, this year, build a new house for the headmaster.
Mr Solomon said resource developers were willing to help people and communities who helped themselves first.
Pureni was known for tribal fighting for many years but that has chnaged in recent times.
Tari State of Emergency field commander inspector Parfery Peni commended the people for working towards peace.
