Aboriginal arts on show

By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
AN arts exhibition of indigenous Australian held under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programme opened at the Holiday Inn in Port Moresby on Monday night.
This event was part of the Australian Day celebrations that displays various colourful and traditional paintings of the environment and the daily lifestyles of the Torres Strait Islanders who live in Queensland.
The islanders live along the Australian/ PNG border.
Together with the Aborigines, the islanders are the indigenous people of Australia.
Australian High Commissioner to PNG Chris Moraitis said the exhibit would be held throughout the world for the next three years.
“And PNG is the first country for this exhibition to be held.”
Mr Moraitis said PNG was selected to be the first country because of the similarity of the traditional and cultural lifestyles of the Torres Strait Islanders and the Western province people.
“These people are just separated by no more than short stretch of water. Both people also trade with each other.”
Western province Governor Dr Bob Danaya and other members of the diplomatic corps attended the event.
