Firearms on the rise in SHP

THE build up of firearms in the Southern Highlands province is threatening this year’s national election in the province.
Deputy provincial administrator and provincial election steering committee member Robin Meleke said the province needed special attention from the Electoral Commission (EC).
He said this during the launch of the second phase of the limited preferential voting (LPV) system awareness conducted by the EC for the Highlands region in Mt Hagen yesterday.
Mr Meleke called on the EC to conduct election in the province ahead of other provinces in the country.
He said firearms in the province posed a big threat to the election despite some illegal firearms being handed back to the Government under the State of Emergency operation.
He said preliminary common roll had already arrived in the province.
Mr Meleke said his committee and SoE members had plans in place to go through the common roll to identify and remove ghost names.
Chairman of the election steering committee and deputy provincial administrator of the Eastern Highlands province John Kemisepe urged election managers and returning officers to educate people in their provinces to fully understand the LPV system and the new changes on the ballot papers.
