Cop charged with wilful murder acquitted

A POLICEMAN, who has been charged with wilful murder, has been acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
Petrus Andreas, 46, from Holik village, Yangoru, East Sepik province, appeared before Committal Court magistrate Posain Poloh last Dec 11 and had his charge thrown out because of lack of evidence.
According to court documents, Andreas allegedly punched a man and beat him with a piece of wood resulting in his death in last June 16.
Andreas was arrested and charged with wilful murder after being interrogated at the provincial police headquarters in Lae.
Andreas maintained, during his mention appearances earlier in court, that he had only pushed the deceased to the ground.
According to court documents sighted by The National, despite statements provided by 17 different witnesses, Mr Poloh still found that the evidences were insufficient to commit Andreas to stand trial, and threw out the wilful murder charge against him.
