Disputing forces make peace
By AUGUSTINE KINNA
THE Bougainville Freedom Fighters and the
U-Vistract soldiers in Siwai, South Bougainville, is now working
together to restore peace and unity in the area.
Last Saturday, the people of Siwai witnessed a new era in Bougainville’s
peace process as the BFF and the U-Vistract soldier’s staged their first
reconciliation ceremony.
The reconciliation ceremony, which was done traditionally, was
spearheaded by the Siwai peace and dialogue committee and all the
paramount chiefs in the area.
The ceremony witnessed the breaking of spears and chewing of betelnut
from both parties, which signifies, true peace and harmony in the area.
According to Tonu paramount chief and Siwai executive manager Joseph
Noro, the spear breaking ceremony signifies that both parties had
promised to surrender their firearms and promote peace in the area.
He said commanders of both parties had expressed concerns to restore
peace and unity amongst themselves and the people of Siwai.
Mr Noro said to bring about this reconciliation ceremony was not an easy
job but with the support and cooperation from the leaders and chiefs in
Siwai, they had now achieved the first stage of the reconciliation.
He said the first stage of the reconciliation could now enable the BFF
and U-Vistract to discuss unaddressed issues face to face in a round
table manner.
The BFF and the U-Vistract are happy with the reconciliation and are
looking forward to the second stage of the reconciliation, which would
involve arms disposal, U-Vistract and the five Fijians.
Mr Noro said both parties had removed roadblocks to allow for Government
services to the area and free movement for mothers and children in the
area.
He said both parties had shown their commitment and had pledged to work
together for a better Bougianville and the good of Siwai district.
