Enga cut off again

By JAMES GUMUNO
CONTINUOUS rainfall in the Western Highlands province has damaged the Enga section of the Highlands Highway.
The road to Enga province and parts of Tambul district in the Western Highlands province was closed yesterday by the Works Department.
This is the second time in three weeks that traffic on the highway has been forced to come to a standstill due to deteriorating road conditions.
The Aviamp section of the highway was washed away by Kia creek after it flooded early this month, forcing traffic to come to a standstill for three weeks.
The Works Department closed the Enga section of the highway after a landslip threatened the collapse of a bridge.
John Puri, the provincial civil engineer with the Works Department, said the bridge was not safe after the Waip River flooded on Monday afternoon and washed away the foundation of the bridge, causing it to slip away from the road, leaving a gap considered dangerous for vehicles.
Mr Puri said the road would be closed for four days for repairs.
He also urged police to be present at the site when work starts to prevent harassment.
Meanwhile, the Tuman River flooded and affected about 4,000 people in Kindeng, South Waghi district, and coffee plantations, food gardens, houses and other property.
