PM thanks workers

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare called for reconciliation when thanking heads of departments and statutory bodies at the dedication service at the Gordon SDA church yesterday.
Sir Michael said the current Government’s term in office will expire in a couple of months and a caretaker Government would take the country into elections.
“I take the opportunity to thank all public servants for their work in the last five years to complement the goals and aspirations of this Government.
“Your efforts, as heads of departments and statutory organisations, to bring forward policies to cabinet and legislations to Parliament are paying off in bringing about growth and development.”
He said for the first time in many years, the Government had enjoyed political stability which was having real positive outcomes on development and the budget.
“We have managed to have three budget surpluses in this term of Government. Imagine what we can achieve if we can work to complement each other in the separate roles that we play as legislators and public servants.”
He also said the Government was concerned that additional requests for funding outside the budget were becoming too frequent.
“Managing our resources has become one of the biggest achievements of this Government. We must continue to manage this good record through proper planning and monitoring.”
He said while the Government had provided a secure environment for growth and development to take place, he raised concern that the implementation of Government decisions was still too slow.
“Much has been said about capacity building as an ongoing process. We must also see the result of this. Mechanisms must now be in place to ensure that decisions are implemented effectively.”
Sir Michael said developing appropriate economic infrastructure had been the Government’s focus since getting into office.
