Two to stand trial for vandalism

By PETER MIVA
TWO former Telikom workers have been committed to stand trial in the National Court for damaging, removing and selling cables in Lae.
Nicholas Sume, in his 30s, from Nalanga village, Afore district, Oro province, and Waida Naemon, 36, from Munum village, Lae district, were both ordered to stand trial on Jan 10 by magistrate Posain Poloh, who found that there was sufficient evidence for them to face a judge in the National Court.
Mr Poloh ordered them to appear for call-over on March 5 and further extended their K300 bail.
The court heard that the two men and another on last Sept 15 dug up 200 dead installation cables along the Milfordhaven Road with a spade and crow bar and removed the cables.
In the process, they damaged one main cable line connecting the Pelgens Group of Companies.
The court heard that the two men took the cables to Pondrilei Recycling Company, where they sold it and got K157.20.
But they were caught after the Pelgens management reported the communication outage to Telikom.
It is alleged that both were arrested after an internal investigation by Telikom which found out about their mischief.
They were charged under Section 172 (b) of the Telecommunication Act No 57 of 1996.
