Catch of the day... A Pari fisherman’s encounter with a 133cm saltwater crocodile yesterday in the Joyce Bay mangroves between Kilakila and Pari village was a hair-raising affair but he was aptly compensated for his troubles when he reported his catch to a local crocodile hunter at Gordon. The fisherman was casting his net out to see when he snared the crocodile and fled in panic. As soon as he regained his composure, he reported his catch to Martin Haro of Northern Trading Ltd – a trader in crocodile skin exports and perhaps Port Moresby version of Crocodile Dundee. Mr Haro organised his boys and soon had the crocodile rendered helpless and ready for the skin market. Mr Haro said the crocodile had a first grade skin and the Pari fisherman was promptly paid K235 for his troubles. He, however, sounded a warning for local fishermen in the area – “where there’s one crocodile, there was bound to be more, so be careful”.
