NEC gives nod for new office

The National Executive Council (NEC) has given the nod for the creation of the Office of Climate Change.
A source said that NEC was deliberating on the matter yesterday as Papua New Guinea was one of the nation’s leading on climate change issue with the agenda brought to the world attention at the United Nations General Assembly as well as in Bali.
He said Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare was co-chairman of the coalition of nations in climate change and a separate office was to help facilitate the agenda.
He said also on the agenda was World Bank financing, and cabinet was still meeting yesterday with no immediate details released.
The source said that departmental heads appointment was on the agenda but policy issues had taken precedence.
The Prime Minister on Wednesday during the dedication service at Parliament House said reform agendas include the public sector reform, foreign policy review, telecommunication, review of the three-tier government structure, legislative reform to generate participation of small contractors in the anticipated reform at the district level resulting from funding injection in the current budgets and more.
The NEC meeting yesterday was understood to have deliberated on these reforms with the intention of approval and implementation.
