Young life

Once I was young
As young as you
But it was once
Never to be again
It was like in mirage
To be young
It was all fun
To be a young man
It was all charm
To be a young woman

Cherish the youth
You get the most
Reckless the youth
You get nothing
To be young
Is like a goldish
To be young
Is like a silver shining
To be young
Is my best pastime
In life

O granddaughter

O granddaughter, where did you go today?
O granddaughter, what has taken you away from home?
Grandma, I went to school today to learn the new ways
About how to read and write and do maths
I think it is very exciting

O granddaughter, who will help me collect my firewood?
O granddaughter, who will help me fetch my water?
Grandma these people who teach the new ways
Have houses with water and electricity
If I do better maybe one day we’ll own such a house

O granddaughter, who will help me cook my food?
O granddaughter, who will help me wash my clothes?
Grandma, in these houses they have many good things
Like a washing machine to wash your clothes
And a stove to cook your food, all on your own

O granddaughter, why are you packing?
O granddaughter, are you going somewhere far?
Grandma, I am going away to boarding school
To further my quest for these new ways
But it will only be for a short while

O granddaughter, who will talk to me?
O granddaughter, who will keep me company?
Grandma, I will write to you as often as I can
And I’ll visit you every term break, I promise
I may even be able to send you pictures to see

O granddaughter, you are a good child
I know you’ll keep your promise
But promise me when you come home
You’ll teach me to read and write
So that I will read your letters and write to you
