Radio networks
should use airtime meaningfully
I REFER to the letter “Thank you Kennedy” (Jan 18) by BN John
of Lae in which he raised concern about PNG radio networks using their
airtime on music.
Yes, it is certainly disgusting to hear music after music with the
announcers naming the songs’ titles, singers or groups’ name.
Radio is more effective to the mass compared to other media like TV and
newspapers.
As such, programmers should use a good percentage of the airtime to address
appropriate development issues affecting the real needs of the people and
the community.
PNG is facing a lot of problems with corruption and bribery. We also have
diseases other than HIV/AIDS and other health issues.
I challenge the announcers to go out and do research to gather information
of importance to the public.
By saying this, I believe that Roger Ha’ofa and his crew on FM100 are the
only group with the experience to be involved in really meaningful airtime
show in PNG.
The rest are basically promoting the music industry.
I believe the Government can intervene and request the radio stations to
give some of the airtime to community by having programmes on health,
development, politics, environment, education and law and order issues.
Talk back show is a meaningful contribution as the public is actively
involved.
I’m sure the announcers can coordinate this kind of programme rather than
play music all the time.
