Agencies providing agro services not performing

We write to congratulate Alele Fresh Produce for sprearheading the potato project in Enga province (The National, Jan 31).
Many Government agencies funded by the Government are not doing as expected but it seems that private sector organisations are doing more for the farmers in the rural areas of the country.
The Government should refocus its support and should give assistance to such organisations as Alele Fresh Produce and make the Government agencies work hard to receive funding.
As a case to illustrate, our concern, the farmers of Eastern Highlands province have not benefited from the activities of Fresh Produce Development Agency even though it has its head office and a field office in the province, and has been in operation for more than 15 years.
The Government should critically assess the performance of such organisations and make appropriate decisions as they have been very unproductive.
We leave the ball in the hands of the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock and the Secretary for the Department of Agriculture and Livestock to wake up and make sure such agencies are performing as expected for the benefit of the stakeholders.
