COLUMN I
ON Monday, we told you of our long-standing correspondent
in Geraldton,Western Australia, Dr Momia Teariki-Tautea. Today we go further
afield, all the way to Yap.
***
GOOD morning. Yes – there really is a place named Yap. And if you were to
drop in there, you would almost certainly meet the state’s chief medical
surgeon – Peter Gimots, another of our far-flung Papua New Guinean medical
specialists.
***
GREETINGS Peter – and thanks for responding to our call to distant readers
to tell us about their corner of the world. Here’s Peter: “Yap is one of the
four states comprising the Federated States of Micronesia. It’s positioned
seven degrees north of the Equator, with latitude just a little west of the
PNG-Indonesian border.”
***
PETER continues: “If you had a closer look at the map, it’s located between
the US territory of Guam and the Republic of Palau. Never mind if you don’t
see it; Guam at least will be shown, so imagine Yap as being one of the
small dots just south-west of it. Generally, the islands are known as the
Western Caroline Islands and share a common sea border with the
Philippines.”

OUR distant surgeon ended by saying that he “just wanted to let you know
that, once again, here in a small corner of the Pacific, is another Papua
New Guinean – and there could be more in the states north and east of where
I am.” Peter, thanks for contacting us and we look forward to hearing from
others of our countrymen and women, no matter where you may be. The contact
is DeeNesenolis@hotmail.com; get in touch today!

AND now for our many stay at home readers, particularly here in the capital
– treat yourself to an evening you’ll never forget with outstanding singer
and songwriter Ross Ryan, who opens tonight at the Bacchus restaurant at the
Airways. Ryan’s music combines humour with a twist, songs that pluck the
heartstrings and musical influences from all over the world. Just three
performances and a superb dinner in the Bacchus style – tonight, tomorrow
and Saturday at 7. Quick – ring 324 5200 and reserve now. Cheers!
