DWU in dire need of spaces for studies

ALTHOUGH the Divine Word University (DWU) is continually expanding its academic programmes and support services such as accommodation, it is confronted with an overwhelming demand for study places for potential students who enroll there each year.
DWU vice president (academic) Brother Andrew Simpson pointed this out last Feb 6 as the university was preparing to enroll new and continuing students last Feb 11.
Br Simpson said the university was investing significantly in ensuring growth of its programmes and services annually.
“But that growth is being overwhelmed by even a greater demand for space for potential students,” he said.
Br Simpson said the university acknowledged its moral obligation to educate as many young Papua New Guineans as possible and took proactive measures to provide more slots.
He said apart from expanding the university facilities such as accommodation each year, it was encouraging the local Madang students and those that could find alternate accommodation to be non-residential students.
He said this was one proactive measure the university had taken to offer study opportunities to more students.
Br Simpson also pointed out that because of the huge demand for space, some students who had outstanding fees or turned up the following week with less than the required amount would find themselves in a difficult situation to acquire places in the university.
He said parents and sponsors have to realise the huge demand for space not only in DWU but in all education institutions.
“If they cannot meet the required fees, they have to pay at the enrollment, they would find themselves in a difficult situation,” Br Simpson pointed out.
He said newly selected students had been well-informed of their obligation to pay the fees.
