Snooker in for hectic ‘08 season

PORT Moresby Billiards and Snooker Association is bracing for a big year following unprecedented good response for its first competition of the 2008 season.
A total of 22 teams have nominated for the SP Brewery Inter-Team competition which cues off next week.
The number of teams is an increase to last year’s 19
Premiers Bestcars, Starland Freezers, Moni Plus and new team Warner Shand Lawyers are part of the A Grade competition while keen snooker player and administrator Yannis Nicolaou leads three Lamana teams into battle for the top prize.
The A Grade competition will cue off next Monday, Feb17, while the B Grade has attracted nine teams to start the ball rolling the next day.
Champions Bishop Brothers, Rapidresponse/Woodstock Sawmill, Nationwide Adjusters, Tradewinds, Coca-Cola, Prime Cleaning Services, Active Power Systems, Market 2000 and Ela Motors Toyota comprising media personnel will challenge for the B Grade title.
Moni Plus Strikers, who won the C grade competition, Crawford & Co, Vams Building & Maintenance, Pacific MMI Insurance, Market 2000 and Ela Motors Yamaha, and another media team have nominated for this division.
The C grade competitions will be staged on Wednesday. Port Moresby Country Club, Aviat Club, and Bomana Police Officers Mess have put their hands up as venues for the competition.
POMBSA officials said this week that they are very excited about the competition because this is the first time all the teams have been sponsored.
“We’d like to thank all the sponsors for their support in this sport,” John Chan, a key organiser and player in the competition, said yesterday.
Chan said that players who wished to play but could not find a team should contact him as there a certain teams that need players.
