Probe mine deal between State, company

IT was recently reported by the other paper that the mainland Chinese developer of the Ramu nickel project has been breaching the country’s laws.
If true, the Government is again letting the people down by allowing the Chinese company to do so at the expense of landowners and other Papua New Guineans.
The Ombudsman Commission should investigate every agreement signed between the State and the company.
Alternatively, we should have an inquiry similar to the ongoing one into the Moti affair.
I have heard and seen frequent mine incidents in China and I can imagine the conditions at the Ramu nickel project.
The Labour and Employment Secretary was right to visit the site unannounced. The Government must do something before it is too late.
The rights of the landowners and the environment must take precedence over everything else.
Other firms have spent millions to establish world class mines which comply with our laws and respect the environment and people.
Do not let us look stupid before the international community.
We have standards on occupational health and safety requirements, living conditions, employment benefits, compensation for land, etc.
We must not rush to develop the mine. The minerals will not decay or disappear.
