Danaya wants politics out of appointments

WESTERN province governor and Public Accounts Committee deputy chairman Dr Bob Danaya has called on the Government not to politicise appointments of departmental heads and provincial administrators.
Instead, Governor Danaya urged the Government through cabinet to follow set procedures with the strengthening of existing processes in appointing heads of the public service machinery.
“Papua New Guinea had learned lessons recently in the saga involving the appointment of the police commissioner, which was highly politicised by the Executive Government,” he said.
“The Government had been preaching about merit-based appointments but unfortunately, this had not happened and continued to be abused and manipulated by cabinet.
“It must allow the public service to function without fear or favour.”
Dr Danaya said this situation had led to conflicts and animosity among senior management of the departments, statutory bodies and provincial government heads.
He said this also led to lack of discipline, unproductiveness and low morale.
He said public servants were blamed for non-performance, “yet it is the result of political interference over the past 31 years of independence that affects their performance”.
Dr Danaya said the timing for major reshuffle for heads of departments, statutory bodies and provincial governments was inappropriate and unnecessary as this would cause instability and chaos in the public service.
He said if the Government had an agenda for the coming general elections, then these changes would be improper and not in the best interest of the nation.
