NCD voters show keen interest to enrol

By HARLYNE JOKU
National Capital District (NCD) voters are showing keen interest in enrolling for the June general election.
Supporters motivated by candidates turned up in truckloads last week to enrol at the NCD electoral office in Downtown Port Moresby yesterday, a returning officer confirmed.
Cyril Retaw, the returning officer for Port Moresby North-east said they helped the keen voters to check their names on the updated common roll.
“They came in truckloads last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We believe they were supporters of certain candidates and we attended to them,” Mr Retaw said.
There were reports that NCD electoral officers were turning away people at the electoral office, telling them to go back and wait at home for enrolment next Monday.
But Mr Retau said his officers attended to the crowd and assured them that phase two of the common roll update would take place next Monday.
He said electoral officers would be conducting a final house-to-house update of the common roll in homes in suburbs, residential areas and settlements in Port Moresby
It was estimated that about 50 persons turn up each day at the NCD electoral office to enrol.
The interest shown by the public in ensuring that their names were on the common roll was a good sign, Mr Retaw said.
