DELEGATES from Thailand and Japan who are attending a week-long seminar on disabilities in Port Moresby, said Papua New Guinea is a beautiful place with friendly people and should consider looking at making tourism accessible to persons with disabilities.
Tourists with physical disabilities go in groups to visit other countries or places and this could be a good tip for the country’s growing tourism sector, Topong Kulkhanchit, regional development officer for Disabled People’s International Asia Pacific Region (DPI), said.
Mr Kulkhanchit said this was the norm in other countries, which have in place disability accessibility in airport areas, car parking lots, toilets, hotels, restaurants, lifts and other public areas.
“Tourism should be made accessible to every tourist, including those with disabilities.
“If PNG takes up the initiative to do the same and develop accessible tourism, the country may have more tourists coming in,” he said.
“There are so many breathtaking places you can visit in PNG and all of them boast of unique beauty with diverse cultural background and lifestyles – it’s a pity not all tourists who want to visit can make it here because of accessibility problem.”
Mr Kulkhanchit said he had been to PNG a couple of times but wished all parking areas including hotels, restaurants, toilets and lifts and even other public buildings were accessible to people like him.
