Haus tambaran to be honoured

THE Parimbe village in East Sepik province will be holding a feast of cultural activities to celebrate 40 years of the existence of the haus tambaran (spirit house) later this year.
Village chief Aaron Yambu, Village Court magistrate Marcus Watnawi and Pr Aaron Dumoi, who are in Wewak to make a nationwide appeal, urged all sons of Parimbe to help with cash or in kind towards the celebration.
The celebration is set for July 3.
The haus tambaran was completed and opened to public on July 3, 1967.
It is a sacred place where young men undergo traditional initiation rituals, a custom which is common among the Sepik River villages.
Mr Yambu said the haus tambaran had deteriorated over the years, and renovation would be carried out soon after the celebrations.
East Sepik tourism officer Edward Meata, who also visited the haus tambaran in 1991, said the building needed to be replaced.
He urged the Parimbe people to take pride and ownership of the sacred and historical house and donate generously for its upkeep.
Artifacts, carvings and local singsing groups will be on display for showgoers during the celebrations.
Mr Yambu said those who would like to assist financially could deposit their contributions at their nearest ANZ branch to Paiambit Hausboi account number 12644286 ANZ Wewak branch.
