Morobe boxers aim high

By WENDY KATUSELE
THE Morobe boxing team’s chances at the coming national and trials championships in Port Moresby this weekend looks good with the team aiming to secure a few spots in the national team to the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, in May.
The boxers are Charlie Rodney (57kg), Kevin Sam (60kg), Billy Mamu Kian (69kg), Sailas John (51kg) and Luke Benette.
John and Benette were the latest to be endorsed by the Papua New Guinea Amateur Boxing Union last month.
The championships are slated for February 17-18 in Port Moresby with a team to be named after the two-day event for the Pacific Games.
But sadly though not all of them would board the plane to the capital city if their airfares shortfall of K2,000 which is required to be paid by tomorrow.
Morobe Amateur Boxing Association secretary Siwah Kawah was however, confident of the five boxers doing well at the tournament but his biggest worry was to secure that shortfall to enable all the boxers travel to Port Moresby.
He said despite that the boxers have trained hard to be there for the fight.
He said the association had financial problems and with the election of its new office bearers was set to promote the code in the province again.
Despite numerous knocks on business houses doors for financial assistance, the team to managed to receive assistance from International Food Corporation through its tinned fish brand ëBesta’ early this week.
The company donated collared T-shirts for the squad members to wear at the Feb 17-18 event.
Kawah thanked IFC and Prima Smallgoods for their donation in kind.
