Banning nightclubs won’t stop
social woes
I find Dr Marat’s litany on the evils of nightclubs quite
disturbing. Nightclubs are being viewed as a form of social cancer that is
eating away at society.
Dr Marat’s demand for a ban on all nightclubs suggests he perceives this
path as the solution to ameliorating PNG’s social problems.
The concept of freedom should in no way be lost upon the learned Minister
for Attorney-General and Justice; he posses a sound understanding of the
constitution and the rights and freedoms it guarantees. Dr Marat’s ideology
should not become another citizen’s morality by way of legislation.
Most nightclubs represent an avenue for socialising in a secure environment.
Some people find solace in the comforts of a beautiful countryside; others
find release in sporting carnivals and there are others who enjoy the booze,
the music and exotic company.
It is ignorance to insinuate that nightclubs are the flagship of all social
problems. Social problems have been around since time immemorial and will
remain an integral part of any society.
PNG thoroughly lacks good governance and thus a virtuous first effort for Dr
Marat would be to rid Waigani of the labyrinth of corruption and the
epidemic thievery that runs unabated there.
