Over 800 displaced in Telefomin

More than 800 people have been displaced with hundreds of food gardens washed away by flood at a remote Yapsie area of Telefomin in the Sandaun province last week.
Reports reaching the provincial administration office in Vanimo said that ward one, two and 13 have been badly affected due to continuous heavy rain and flooding in the area since early this month.
Telefomin district health coordinator Kepeni Hohom, who reported the situation via the health radio, said communities living along the Yapsie River including the Yapsie station with seven public servants, church workers and three businessmen were affected.
He said domestic animals, canoes and houses were all swept away by floods. However, no casualties were reported.
Mr Hohom said ward 13 area is yet to be assessed as it is difficult to access at this stage.
According to the LLG project officer, the areas heavily affected need urgent attention from the Sandaun provincial disaster office with tents for affected households, food and medical supplies.
Provincial disease control office in Vanimo said yesterday that the flood have subsided but an outbreak of diarrhoea had been reported and have urged all health workers from the nearby area to move in and assist while medical supplies to be airlifted.
