PMV safety is an issue

I refer to article in (The National Jan 21) regarding the narrow escape of a PMV bus while travelling towards town and a near collision with a customs cartage hauler.
This is very disgusting because PMV operators blame price increases for parts and services to keep buses that have been on the road for over 20-30 years.
About 50% of PMVs operating in Lae city are old, so operators modify parts with wires, ropes, rods or whatever materials that can be used to keep the vehicles running.
One such example was that above example that was reported. In this case a strip of rubber was allegedly used to hold the steering rod together.
As a citizen of PNG and a person residing in Lae city, I ask the Land Transport Board and Police Traffic Office to do something about these problems.
Confiscate PMV buses that are not roadworthy or charge PMV operators for driving dangerous vehicles.
These PMVs are operated to transport the travelling public to work, school or to do business in and out of the city so their safety should be ensured.
I ask law enforcement agencies to physically check these PMVs properly for safety of the travelling public.
