Cop disarmed, charged over Bomana shooting

THE police officer named in the alleged shooting and wounding of eight Correctional Service officers in Port Moresby last week has been disarmed and charged.
And NCD police chief has assured continued comradeship with the Correctional Service (CS) officers despite what had happened.
Police investigators disarmed the chief sergeant (named) last Thursday following the alleged shooting on Wednesday night at the Bomana Police College.
NCD metropolitan superintendent Fred Yakasa confirmed the action on the officer and said the officer was charged with assault but more charges were likely to follow once police investigations were completed.
“It is nothing big. We have no grudges against each other,” he said in relation to the status of relationship between police and CS officers after the incident.
The other charges that are likely to follow depending on the outcome of the investigations are criminal in nature under the PNG Criminal Code Act.
These would be alleged possession of firearm while under the influence of alcohol and also attempted murder.
A senior officer wishing anonymity, said the senior sergeant would be disciplined within the police force regulations as efforts to ‘clean out the police force’ of such behaviour by its members were continuing.
“We will take action accordingly because we do not encourage such actions by members of the constabulary,” he said.
Meanwhile, the CS officers nursing pellet wounds have been advised medically that the pellets would not be removed but remain in their skin until such time the flesh, while healing itself, would push the pellets out.
They were reportedly dosed with penicillin and pain killer tablets.
