Porn saga results to be presented to chief censor

By ELIZABETH VUVU
EAST New Britain (ENB) provincial administrator Aquila Tubal is expected to hand over tomorrow the results and materials gathered so far by the administration’s unit looking into the pornography saga to the PNG chief censor Steven Mala.
Mr Mala told The National last Friday that he and his officers from the censorship board (CB) would be travelling to the province to receive the materials.
He said he had written a letter to Mr Tubal recently requesting that all pornographic materials gathered be handed over to the CB, that being one of the appropriate bodies to receive such materials and which would later be responsible to completely destroy them.
Mr Mala could not comment on whether he would also receive gathered materials from the other two investigating teams in ENB including Dr Allan Marat’s Rabaul team and a five-man police team, saying he had not been in contact with them.
Bernie Benson from the Rabaul investigating team confirmed that he had recently spoken to the PNG deputy chief censor Jim Abani that once their report and materials were finalised, they would inform Mr Abani regarding the handover of the materials.
Mr Mala said pornography was widespread and it was good to see majority of the people being concerned and doing something about it after the issue was exposed through the media.
He could not comment on the porn saga in ENB as yet, saying he did not want to interfere in the current investigations.
Mr Mala said pornography was not much of a big issue at the time he joined CB in 1992 as people had no access to the latest technology.
However, he said technology could not be entirely blamed as it was part of development.
“What is the use of being fined K200 only for going through all the trouble ?” he aske referring to penalties.
