India beat PNG
CRICKET powerhouse India easily accounted for PNG in the
opening round of the Under 19 Cricket World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,
yesterday scoring a 195-run victory at the Kinrara Cricket Academy.
India batting first cruised to 5-280. The high point of the innings being an
impressive 83 not out from India’s Tanmay Srivastava.
Other Indians to cash in on the runs were keeper Shreevats Goswami (58),
Captain Virat Kohli and Taruwar Kohli both notching 40.
All Indian top order batsmen contributed to the total but never really hit
their straps in posting a sizable target.
PNG bowlers led by Jacob Mado and Collin Amini toiled hard all day but had
precious little to show for their efforts as the Indian batsman for the most
part had their measure.
PNG’s reply was spirited if somewhat tame. By the tenth over PNG were
struggling at 3 for 40.
Although runs were being scored at a reasonable rate early on, it was
obvious that PNG were finding the going hard, not adjusting well enough to
the Indian pace attack.
PNG were bowled out for 85 runs by the 28th over with paceman Pradeep
Sanghwan 2 -13, Ajitesh Argal 2-2 and V Kohli 2-4 proving too sharp while
spinner SA Iqbal 3-4 had the PNG batsman in all sorts.
Tony Arua (15) and Alfred Amini (26) showed some resistance with the bat
however it was a bleak story for the rest of the line up with single figure
scores being the order of the day. PNG will take on the West Indies on
Wednesday.
