GOOD morning PNG and the world at large! Our felicitations to all our
Chinese readers, who are about to begin the Year of the Boar.
***
WHAT are the characteristics of those born in the Year of the Boar? They
are reputedly pure of heart, generous and kind. Full of inner strength
and courage, they can take on any task. The Boar is sincere and
trustworthy and driven by a passion for life. So if you’re a boar, you’re
one of the nicer people in this world.

HERE are some famous boars: From the entertainment world comes Woody
Allen and Lucille Ball; Steven Spielberg, Fred Astaire, Humphrey Bogart,
Dudley Moore and Julie Andrews. Politics can certainly claim some
heavyweight boars including Henry Kissinger; former Nationalist Chinese
leader Chiang Kai-Shek and in the here and now, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

BOAR years - the years in which you must have been born to be a boar -
are 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995 and of course, 2007. The
western star sign of Scorpio is supposedly the nearest to the Chinese
boar; in any event, our best wishes to our Chinese friends for a
successful 2007.

SPY came through on the telephone yesterday from his beloved Madang. He
reported an excellent graduation day at Divine Word, packed with both
students passing out from the university and with parents and friends.
Speakers included Sir Peter Barter, who holds the Health and Bougainville
Affairs portfolios, and who delivered the keynote address.

HIGHER Education, Science and Technology Minister David Basua’s speech
was presented by newly-appointed Higher Education chairman Simon Kenehe.
The ceremony began with a speech from DWU Council chairman Fr Garrett
Roche, followed by DWU president Fr Jan Czuba, who spoke of past
achievements and future plans in his address.

SPY reported that academic staff and students provided a brilliant splash
of colour at the assembly, held on a newly-constructed platform under the
giant ficus tree near the Friendship Library. Congratulations to all
concerned.
