News from Ramu nickel project “a
disgrace”
The PNG Government has let the people
down with greedy self-centered politicians allowing a Chinese
company into PNG at the expense of landowners and Papua New
Guineans.
As an ordinary Papua New Guinean, I hear and see news of frequent
accidents that occur at mines around China and I definitely know
what it will be like at the Ramu nickel/cobalt mine.
Before it is too late, the Government has to step in and do
something about it. The Labour Secretary has done the right thing
to visit the camp unexpectedly and discover its appalling
condition.
All relevant Government authorities must support him so that laws
and regulations of PNG are strictly adhered to and complied with.
Above all, the right of the landowners and their environment is
paramount and must not be sidetracked.
CRA (BCL), Placer (PJV and Misima), Lihir, Chevron Niugini and Oil
Search, to name a few, have spent millions of kina to build world
class mines in PNG that comply with the laws of this land,
environment and train people to world class standards.
Many of these workers are now being offered jobs in the mining and
petroleum sector around the world.
We already have world class mines that already set standards in
terms of occupational health and safety, living conditions, and
the perks and privileges of mine employment, compensation for
land, environment, etc.
We must not rush to develop this mine. The minerals will not run
away. It is ours and will remain ours. We must demand that whoever
comes to get them should strictly observe our laws and follow
them.
