 US military personnel impressed

THE Papua New Guinea Defence Force medical detachment in Kiunga, Western province, has impressed visiting United States military personnel of their HIV/AIDS awareness in and around the district.
Lt Col Jennifer Hughes and medical doctor Susan McClintock are visiting the PNGDF under a letter of agreement signed in last May by the PNGDF Health Services and the US Pacific Command Centre of Excellence based in Hawaii.
Lt Col Hughes said the Pacific Command was pleased to assist the PNGDF Health Services to fight HIV/AIDS in the military and also would enable the military to assist its civilian counterparts.
“On our recent visit to Kiunga I was very impressed to see and learn of your HIV/AIDS awareness in the area,” Lt Col Hughes told medical staff at the military hospital in Taurama barracks.
PNGDF director of Health Services Lt Col Gideon Kendino on behalf of the Chief of Personnel thanked Pacific Command for their assistance, when they donated computers and accessories at the cost of US$18,000 (K56,250) to eight units of the PNGDF.
Lt Col Kendino also urged the opportunity to make available the PNGDF work place policy on HIV/AIDS.
“Despite the fact that PNGDF was the first Government Department to formulate a workplace HIV/AIDS policy, the publication was delayed due to some circumstances until late last year,” Lt Col Kendino said.
