Church in awareness drive

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
THE Catholic church in the Western Highlands province is campaigning for good leaders to be elected into Parliament in the coming national election.
Catholic Caritas have gone out to all parishes in the six districts of the province to educate people to vote for good leaders and refrain from taking bribes.
Group leader and deputy chairman of the Diocesan Pastoral Advisory Board Joseph Tep and Caritas coordinator Kenasus Koipa said last Friday that the Catholic church didn’t support any candidates or political parties.
Mr Tep said that they wanted the people to understand how important the election was and elect good transparent leaders.
He said that in the past people blindly voted anybody who gave them a bottle of beer, money, lamb flaps or promised them material gains when they got into power.
He said many promises were never fulfilled.
Mr Tep said they were visiting parishes in Minj, Kumdi, Urup, Koibuka and Kiripia to tell people to study the candidates’ background and way of life properly before voting.
He said that next week they would visit North Waghi district and proceed to Jimi early next month.
“We are telling people not to vote for a candidate because he gives them money or other material things.
“We encourage them to elect good leaders from their own community or from other tribes, who they believe can deliver goods and services,” Mr Tep said.
