Journos urged to get comments only from designated officers

POLICE Commissioner Gari Baki has appealed to journalists to work with only the designated police officers including him when seeking official police comments for reporting purposes.
These designated officers include all provincial police commanders (PPCs), the Highlands, Islands, Momase and Southern divisional commanders, the two deputy police commissioners – Tom Kulunga (administration) and Jim Andrews (operations) – and director of police media unit Supt Dominic Kakas.
“I will be holding my divisional commanders and PPCs responsible for anything that goes on in their regions,” Mr Baki assured journalists while stressing that information should be sought only from these officers.
Mr Baki was concerned about media reports – especially in the two daily newspapers – in recent months on the issues of alleged in-fighting and reactions from certain factions on his appointment by the National Executive Council as Commissioner of Police.
“I will be very strict and stringent.
“The image of the Constabulary has been tarnished in the last six months,” he said, adding that it seemed that any member of the Police Force felt responsible in making comments in the media, when it was not the case.
Mr Baki said despite the reconciliation gathering last month among the senior members, the feeling of mutual understanding was not there.
