File affidavits in court: Salika tells  Somare’s advisers

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare and his advisers have been urged to file affidavits to counter Mr Joseph Assaigo’s claims in his own affidavit, rather than make media statements.
Defence Board of Inquiry chairman Justice Gibbs Salika gave this advice last Friday when advisers Barney Rongap and Leonard Louma appeared to give evidence.
He told them that against an already filed affidavit, it was legally necessary for them to adequately defend themselves in a court of law by making their own rebuttals in an affidavit form.
Justice Salika said mere press releases would not carry any weight in a court of law.
However, Mr Louma said he would only go to the courts if it was necessary.
He said he was telling the truth and whether it was before the inquiry or before the courts, “the truth remained unchanged”.
“Truth does not change wherever you make it. I am not a chameleon that changes its colour….and I am telling the truth,” Mr Louma said.
Justice Salika also suggested that Mr Louma as the PM’s chief of staff should also relay this message to the Prime Minster.
Mr Rongap said he would take up the advice.
