Gold bar heist suspects fall

SCORES of punters last Saturday watched in awe as Port Moresby city’s finest moved swiftly to nab three men suspected of being with a gang who held up the Metal Refining Operations Ltd office last week.
Plainclothes policemen and undercover operatives surrounded a car outside the bookie at Four Mile and collared the suspects without any struggle in full view of the punting public at about 1.30pm last Saturday.
As the punters watched, the policemen confiscated a large wad of notes from a suspect and a search of the car’s booth yielded several police uniforms and boots.
A carton of beer was also confiscated.
MROL office lost K1 million in cash and 15 gold bars to robbers in police uniform last Wednesday when the armed culprits struck between 11pm and midnight.
Police were working on a lead that the robbers had connections with insiders at MRO.
The robbers, posing as policemen, held up a security guard who then led them to a staff who had the safe’s secret code.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Mark Kanawi said the guard and the staff were being questioned in relation to the robbery and that they were not ruling out ‘inside job.”
It was reported that when the guard was held up, he led the robbers – in police uniform – to the home of a female staff that had the code to the safe at the office, which stored the money including the gold bars.
Then the men with the guard, now with the female staff in their company, headed back to the MRO office where they entered the building.
She entered the pin codes and opened the safe after which the men hauled off its contents.
