CAA upgrades staff, facilities
By ALISON ANIS
THE Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is undergoing a K5 million
restructure toward improving its human resources by recruiting new
people and creating new training opportunities for present personnel.
CAA chief executive officer Joseph Kintau last Thursday announced the
agency has decided on major refurbishment after it realised that there
has not been any new recruitments over the last fifteen years.
Mr Kintau said most of the personnel are under-trained and now reaching
the retirement age of 50.
The authority has allocated a total funding of K5 million towards the
recruitment and training processes of both the new and the current
aviation staff, Mr Kintau said.
He said half of the funds will go towards the setting up of the new
training facilities for air traffic officers and technical staff.
Mr Kintau said recruitment process begun last year and went on during
the last 12 months.
“We do not have a training facility at the moment and we are currently
looking at upgrading CAA training college in Mt Hagen and turning the
old Jackson’s airport control tower into a new high-tech training
facility for our staff.”
For the time being, the workers including the new recruits will be
receiving their training from overseas.
“Airways New Zealand will conduct on-the-job training and update our new
staff on air traffic services with the objective of creating awareness
at the international level”
Mr Kintau said would cost around K3.5 million while the upgrading of the
old control tower to include high-tech and facility upgrade would cost
around K1.5 million.
“Renovations are due to start soon and once everything is completed by
next February, we could start the training.”
