Waigani Drive rehab on

THE traffic congestion along Waigani Drive in Port Moresby will be the thing of the past, thanks to a K36 million road rehabilitation programme of the city government.
The 1.8km four-lane road will be upgraded to a six-lane stretch starting at the traffic lights near the Boroko Motors and will extend all the way through to the traffic lights near the Kone Tigers oval at Waigani.
The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) and Governor Wari Vele last Friday officially launched the project.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr Vele, with help from construction company Global Construction Ltd, operated the excavator to dig up some earth.
Acting city manager Lesley Alu said the project is stage three of the Waigani Drive rehabilitation programme.
It is a project that has remained unfulfilled since 2004, Mr Alu said. “Due to some circumstances we did not get it off the ground,” he added.
Global Construction’s Nelson Yano said the company was glad to carry out the rehabilitation work to ease traffic congestion along one of NCD’s busiest roads especially during peak hours.
