A potential for mergers

TREASURER Sir Rabbie Namaliu is being strongly backed to lead the next government as the prime minister.
Political observers say many leaders of new political parties are considering teaming up and going into the general elections with Pangu Pati as partners.
“Party leaders have to choose now who their partners are. It will be too late if you leave it until after the elections, and the ruling party is not necessarily a safe bet, as was the experience in the last general election,” an observer said.
Last Friday, the Rural Development Party (RDP) announced it was teaming up with the Pangu Pati.
Parliamentary leaders of the two parties Moses Maladina (RDP) and Sir Rabbie (Pangu) announced this in Goroka during a one day Highlands regional convention for RDP.
Sir Rabbie was made the guest speaker at the convention where he pointed out they were ready to team up with other parties that have common policies.
He applauded Mr Maladina and his party executives for framing good policies in rural development.
“If we want a good stable government, political parties should develop good policies for it,” he said. Sir Rabbie said agricultural development was the back bone of the country.
He said the mineral resources that PNG has, would be depleted one day but crops like coffee, cocoa and copra are renewable resources that will continue to support the people.
He said a lot was needed to be done in rural development and it was important for them to unite in pursuing for common development.
Sir Rabbie also said the limited preferential voting (LPV) system paved the way for political parties who share common interest to identify strategies to go into the election as partners.
He said a number parties with common interests and like policies have approached him and he was also looking forward to working with them.
Mr Maladina said they wanted to win and form the government with Pangu.
“It was important to talk about policy issues and party alliances must be made before going into the election, that was why Pangu and RDP were taking the lead,” he said.
Meanwhile, the RDP announced the endorsement of five candidates to contest seats in Eastern Highlands province.
The candidates are; Jonnie Goikoiyo (Daulo), Kanera Efu (Lufa) Russel Kela-Iso (Okapa), David Tuisui (Kainantu) and Henry Kiwi (Obura-Wonenara).
