Soccer refs on duties abroad
The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) has appointed two PNGFA soccer referees to officiate the O-League in the Solomon Islands. The O-leagues is the biggest and the highest level of football played in the Oceania region sanctioned by OFC and is the qualifying tournament for the FIFA World Cup to be held in Japan in December 2007. The two referees - Job Minan Ponis and Salaiau Sosogan, both from Port Moresby - will be travelling to the Solomon Islands this Friday to officiate one of the first day of Pool B matches which start on Monday, Feb 19. For Minan and Sosogan to officiate in such a high-level league/tournament is a big achievement in their football careers and is also an achievement for PNGFA. Minan will take the match between Marist FC of the Solomon Islands and Ba FC of Fiji as the central referee while Sosogan will be sitting on the chair as a fourth official of the match at the Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara. Solomon Islander Neil Poloso will be inspecting their performance during the tournament. OFC is organising the O-leagues which features clubs from the South Pacific region from January to April 2007. The champion clubs participating in the O-League include Auckland City FC (NZ), Port Vila Sharks FC (Vanuatu), AS Mont Dore FC (New Caledonia), AS Temanara FC (Tahiti), Marist FC (Solomon Islands) and 4R Electrical Ba FC (Fiji). These countries will compete in the tournament to decide who will represent Oceania in the FIFA World Cup in Japan late this year.
